Nationwide hearing screening in Sweden
Almost all Swedish hospitals offer hearing screening of newborns. From 2007 every Swedish hospital will participate in this programme.
Just five counties still offered no newborn hearing screening in 2006. Those are to join the rest of the country during 2007.
The implementation of a national newborn screening programme has been swift. In 2005, hearing screening was only available in 5 of the 21 counties.
Early identification important
Early identification of hearing impairment is extremely important. The ability to communicate develops primarily between birth and 36 months of age.
The earlier a hearing impaired child is diagnosed, fitted with a hearing aid and given special training, the better the child will manage as he or she grows up.
