Loss of a job or even a career may be part of the price for hearing loss. Eight percent of hearing impaired people either loose their job or choose to resign because of their hearing problem. Four percent are terminated because of their hearing loss. This bleak picture is the result of an extensive survey conducted by the Danish Institute for Social Research in 2003, among 1,600 hearing impaired respondents.

People suffering hearing problems because of tinnitus and Ménières disease are particularly affected and are at higher risk of losing their jobs.

The survey also shows that many hearing impaired people find their prospects of landing a new job discouraging. Twenty-seven percent believe that their hearing loss complicates their job search while nine percent deem it impossible.
