Organisation and financing

In France, there is a subsidy scheme which covers the costs associated with hearing aids completely or in part. To be covered by this scheme, the devices must be found on a list of products and equipment which can be refunded by the health insurance (L.P.P.).

The size of the health insurance compensation is dependent on the age and level of impairment of the claimant. The scheme covers each separate hearing aid.

  • For patients under 20 years of age and for deaf and blind persons, the health insurance compensates up to 65% of the amount on L.P.P.'s list. These amounts can be anywhere from 900-1400 depending on the chosen device. The final compensation from the health insurance can be between 585-910
  • For patients over 20 years of age, 65% of the amount is compensated at a set rate of 199.71 regardless of the type of device. In other words a compensation of 129.81

There is a special scheme for the handicapped in work and for those who are a part of CMU health insurance.

The mutual insurance companies (les mutuelles) can refund the remaining expenses from the health insurance compensation.

Further support can be achieved under certain economical circumstances.

The health authorities do not set any minimums time limit on the renewal of hearing aids (except for those patients with CMU-insurance).

Hearing tests and treatment

To receive a hearing aid it is necessary to first undergo an ontological and audiometric examination. The examination should conclude with an obligatory, medical declaration and it is recommended that this declaration be devised by a specialist within hearing; an ear-nose and throat doctor. The specialist is responsible for the adjustment, dispensing, testing of the effectivity of the device and the technical fitting of the device.
