Switzerland

Switzerland has a 2-part system of subsidies available for people who have a hearing loss. The first part is designed for people who are pensioned (AVS: Alters- und Hinterlassenenversicherung). The second part encompasses people with hearing loss who are still in work and have IV-insurance (Invalidenversicherung).

Both kinds of insurance give financial support for the acquisition of hearing aids after the obligatory doctor's diagnosis. The scale and form of the support is different between the two insurance forms. For children and young people, there are also special rules.

AVS-insurance

Those who are incorporated by AVS-insurance have the right to support for the acquisition of hearing aids every fifth year, if the hearing aid significantly improves the communication abilities of the individual. These people receive a fixed amount which covers around 75% of the average acquisition fee. The amount is 630 CHF. The subsidy is given to the individual and is independent of the actual sale price. The individual must finance the rest of the remaining amount themselves or they may also keep any part of the amount which is left over.

Choice of approved hearing aid and approved supplier is free.

IV-insurance

Those who are incorporated by IV-insurance have the right to support for the acquisition of hearing aids every sixth year. With a doctor's assessment, it is however possible to seek a new subsidy. A doctor's assessment also forms the basis of whether one can receive a subsidy for one (monaural) or two (binaural) hearing aids. With the acquisition of one (monaural) hearing aid, a fixed amount of 840 CHF can be received. If you need two hearing aids, you can receive 1650 CHF. The amounts are given regardless of the actual sale price. The individual must finance the rest of the remaining amount themselves or they may keep any part of the amount which is left over.

Choice of approved hearing aid and approved supplier is free.

Persons with IV-insurance can also receive a subsidy (fixed amount) for the acquisition of batteries and repair of the hearing aids.

Special rules for children

For children and young people, the costs involved with the acquisition of hearing aids is covered. There is however a maximum amount of 2830 CHF for one hearing aid and 4170 CHF for two. The subsidy is given directly to the supplier of the hearing aids.

Children and young people can apply for a new subsidy every sixth year unless a doctor assesses that the level of hearing has changed significantly, so that an earlier modification is necessary.
