The hearing test

It is better with one hearing test too many than one too few.

If you regularly find it difficult to hear properly you should consider having a hearing test. Very often, you will find it hard to determine yourself whether you are suffering from hearing loss, or whether you are just stressed and tired. Many people do not notice that their sense of hearing is gradually deteriorating, and instead they subconsciously adjust to their reduced hearing ability. Therefore, if you are in doubt, it is advisable to have a hearing test.

Your family doctor can often conduct the first examination to establish whether there is any sign of hearing impairment, and, if so, refer you to a more thorough hearing test conducted by a hearing health care professional.

In most cases, the hearing test will detect a hearing loss if one is present, as well as the nature of your hearing loss. Based on the hearing test, the hearing health care professional can determine whether you need to use hearing aids or receive further treatment. A hearing loss can often be remedied if the hearing-impaired person receives the right type of treatment or the correct hearing aids.

On these pages you may read about the procedure for a hearing test for adults and older children. Hearing tests can be conducted in a variety of ways, but the most common steps are as described in these pages.
