According to a Finnish study, 70 percent of people with untreated hearing loss feel handicapped. In contrast, many of those who overcome their reluctance to wear hearing aids experience significant improvements in their quality of life.
An untreated hearing loss can have a devastating impact on quality of life. But quality of life improvements can be achieved with hearing aids and counseling. According to the Finnish study, more than 30 percent of respondents treated with hearing aids reported improvements after six months.
Follow-up counseling is important for the achievement of the full benefits of treatment with hearing aids. Counseling is necessary for the hearing impaired individuals to gain familiarity with the operation and best possible use of their devices.
Fewer in the drawer
Fewer hearing aids end up in a drawer due to improved technology and counseling. According to the study, the number of people wearing hearing aids on a daily basis has increased over the last 20 years. Usage has increased from 69.3 percent to 89.5 percent. Advances include the miniaturization of hearing aids, making them inconspicuous, and improved adaptability to individual hearing needs.
The report was prepared in co-operation with Oulu University. It was based on earlier reports as well as qualitative and quantitative examinations of people in the 40-84 year age group.
