are beginning to acknowledge the importance of discovering hearing loss among infants at an early stage. As a result, infant screening programs are becoming more widely accepted. At the same time, the necessary technology has become less hard of hearing relatives expensive and easier to use.

Some countries are planning to implement screening programs in the coming year. In the USA, screening programs are already in use in some hospitals, and the intention is that hospitals hard of hearing relatives which have not yet implementing these programs will soon do so. The US federal budget for 2001 is said to include full funding for screening programs. However, only 32 states have the framework in place to implement them, hard of hearing relatives but it is hoped that the initiatives in the new budget will encourage all 50 states to introduce the screening programs. The British Government has also announced that it is planning to hard of hearing relatives introduce screening programs to 20 hospitals in early 2001. There are simple sounds such as pure tones (which contain one frequency component only) and complex sounds such as speech or noise that consists of many frequency components.
