7.4% of all Swiss say they have a hearing loss

According to the EuroTrak SUI 2022 survey on hearing loss and use of hearing instruments in Switzerland, 7.4% of all Swiss say they have a hearing loss. Among the Swiss aged 18 years and older, 8.9 % think they have a hearing loss. The numbers are quite similar to the numbers found in the last survey in Switzerland from 2019.
The number of people who think they have a hearing loss in Switzerland is a bit lower compared to other countries where similar EuroTrak surveys have been carried out, such as Germany, France, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy. On average, one in ten in Europe say they have a hearing loss.
Use of hearing aids
In the survey, nearly half (46%) of those who say they have a hearing loss said that they use hearing aids. In 2019, the figure was 43.7%. 84% of all hearing aid users in Switzerland use two hearing aids.
The rates of hearing aid use in Switzerland are a bit higher than in the surveys carried out in the other European countries.
The benefits of hearing aids
The survey found that hearing aids had significant positive impact on different aspects of daily life. Especially the ability to communicate, participate in group activities, social life and sense of safety improved with the use of hearing aids.
98% of hearing aid owners declare that their hearing aids improve their quality of life at least sometimes and 94% of the hearing aid owners in work state that their hearing aids are useful on their job.
The survey also found that hearing aid owners have a lower risk of being depressed, that quality of sleep seems to improve if the person with hearing loss uses hearing aids and that hearing aid owners are less exhausted in the evening.
Hearing tests
30% of the participants in the survey said that they had a hearing test within the last five years. Most of the tests were carried out by family doctors.
Reimbursement
83% of those with hearing aids in Switzerland received some kind of 3rd party reimbursement.
About the survey
EuroTrak SUI 2022 was designed and carried out by the Swiss analysis firm Anovum on behalf of Hearing Systems Manufacturers (HSM) in Switzerland and the European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association (EHIMA) to measure hearing loss prevalence and hearing aids usage. The survey consisted of around 14,700 interviews.
