Better quality of life with cochlear implants
Seniors with severe to profound hearing loss benefit from cochlear implants. An Italian study finds that cochlear implantation among older adults with a severe hearing loss results in quality of life comparable to that of younger patients with cochlear implants. In the study, speech perception significantly improved in both groups of implanted patients. There were no significant differences in quality of life between younger and older patients.
People with single-sided deafness also benefit from a cochlear implant. A cochlear implant improves communication and gives better understanding of speech and localisation of sounds for people with single-sided deafness, studies find.
Better speech perception
Speech perception improves rapidly with cochlear implants. Adult cochlear implant recipients with a severe or profound hearing loss show marked improvements in their speech perception with a cochlear implant, according an Australian study.
Children with auditory brainstem implant
Children with auditory brainstem implants experience significant auditory improvements. An Indian study among children who received auditory brainstem implant (ABI) shows that children with an ABI show significant auditory improvements.
