An ear implant is a device inserted into the ear in a surgical procedure. Ear implants are particularly helpful to deaf or profoundly hearing impaired people who cannot use ordinary hearing aids.

The implants do not restore normal hearing. They improve hearing, facilitate lip-reading and make it easier to distinguish certain sounds.

The most commonly used implants include:

  • Bone anchored hearing aids
  • Auditory brainstem implants

Ear implants are particularly suited for people who cannot use hearing aids. Problems with the outer ear and the ear canal can make ear moulds uncomfortable to wear or impossible to use. However, individuals who cannot use hearing aids or make use of the amplification they provide, will often benefit from an implant offering improvement in their hearing ability.

Most available types of ear implants are usually more expensive than ordinary hearing aids, and a minor surgical procedure is required to insert the implant into the ear.
