Five month-old with hearing aids

A five month-old girl in Freiburg, Germany, has been fitted with hearing aids in both ears.

According to Dr. Roland Laszig of the University clinic in Freiburg, the infant girl is the youngest hearing aid wearer in the world. Her hearing loss was caused by a prolonged case of cerebrospinal meningitis. The hearing aids were fitted immediately after the infection was over in an attempt to give the girl the best possible chance for normal speech development. Early use of hearing aids is crucial for young infants whose early speech development starts between the ages of four months and six months.
