When someone makes a loud shrill noise close to your ear, you may feel as if you are going deaf. Unfortunately, for Gail Schwartzman, an American house-wife, this became all too real when her 4 year-old daughter kissed her on the ear.
Two years ago, one day when Gail came home from work, her daughter received her with a real big smacker. Gail suddenly had a terrible sensation in her head. The kiss left her with a hearing loss and tinnitus in her left ear.
?The suction of the kiss dramatically disturbed the tiny trio of interconnected bones: the hammer, anvil and stirrup (?). The kiss caused a slight detachment of the stirrup from the muscle and an inflammatory response,? explained Levi Reiter, an audiologist, who is studying Gail's case, to the Newsday newspaper in New York.
Gail has recovered part of her hearing and it is now able to hear mid-frequencies. However, she still cannot use a telephone on her left ear. The doctor believes that it is possible that her hearing and tinnitus may become better with time.
