A Taiwanese study has found that people with a spinal cord injury had a 1.75 times higher risk of developing a sensorineural hearing loss.

A spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function, such as mobility and/or feeling.

Data and findings

The study used data from Taiwan’s Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005. The study included 2,006 participants who had a spinal cord injury and 8,024 in a control group.

In the study during the follow-up, 30 patients in the spinal cord injury group and 87 in the non-spinal cord injury group developed sensorineural hearing loss.

The study, "Increased risk of sensorineural hearing loss in patients with spinal cord injury: a nationwide longitudinal follow-up study", was published in the journal Spinal Cord.
