The International Federation of the Hard of Hearing is the host of an international congress on hearing loss in Finland, 4-9 July, 2004.
The main theme will be accessible communication in working life, study, and rehabilitation.
A hearing impairment is considered first and foremost to be an impairment of communication. The World Health Organization (WHO) has included hearing impairment among the 20 most important health risks. A person suffering from a hearing impairment, in any age group, is at a risk of marginalisation.
Besides representatives of the hard of hearing, the congress delegates will include experts on the subject and other professional parties, such as, physicians, nurses, social workers, and teachers.
A large exhibition will be held as part of the congress, displaying the latest IT technology and aids for the hard of hearing. Displays will include new mobile phone services and speech-to-text programs.
One thousand people are expected to participate in the congress to be held at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland. The patron of the congress is Tarja Halonen, the President of the Republic of Finland.
